Between a parent and a child

This week I learned about an interesting diagram that helps improve relations with people around us. Although this table was created for parents to understand how to better teach their children responsibility, I found it quite useful in my communication with people around me. I would love to share it with you.
The name of this diagram is "Problem-handling model". I know it sounds very strange, I was also surprised when I heard it for the first time. However, to call it “Problem-solving model” would not be correct, because not all problems are solved. Also, each person has a different approach and vision of any problem. That's why this table attracted my attention, it does not solve our problems, but shows ways how we can handle the situation in the right way.

The first step is to ask yourself three questions, "Whose problem is this? Whom does it affect? And who bears the loss? ". Answering these questions, we will be able to determine who should be responsible for solving the problem: a child, a parent or both. If the problem can be solved by a child, then the table advises to let natural consequences happen. By "natural consequences" I mean what would happen if parents did not intervene. For example, if a child does not put his dirty clothes in the laundry on time, and parents don’t do it for a child, then the natural consequence would be that one day there won’t be any clean clothes. Then they will have to put on their dirty clothes that day. I like this method of learning independence, because who will the child blame? Himself, because he was the one who allowed this to happen. Of course, even when we allow the natural consequences to happen, we must not forget to sincerely participate in the life of the child and express regret when they are angry with these consequences. This will help them to know that their parents really understand and want to help, and aren’t trying punish them. Instead of saying, "I warned you and reminded you. So now go in the dirty clothes", we can express our regret," Yeah, I would not want to wear dirty clothes either. It must be very frustrating. It's good that you can wash it all today and put on clean clothes tomorrow." It's important to continue supporting your child, but at the same time give them a way to solve the problem.
On the other hand, when answering questions you understand that the solution lies in you, then the table offers four steps that can help. When the decision is up to you, I mean that the problem affects you too, not just the child. For example, if the child does not clean the apartment, does not wash the dishes, or something else, then this is not only his problem but yours as well. The first step is to politely ask the child to do what is needed. This step is very important because at this moment we show the child how to react / behave in a problem situation, we also show that we respect them as individuals and express our openness to listen to their opinion about it. If, after you have asked, nothing has changed and the problem still exists, then the second step will be to express your feelings. The table gives an example of how to do it right. For example, if a child constantly throws things everywhere, you can tell him. "When I come home and see toys everywhere, I'm very upset because there is a mess in the house. I would like you to always clean up after yourself, especially before I come." Expressing your feelings is important, instead of blaming a child and trying to convince that he/she should do what we want. Instead, the goal should be to teach them to think about the feelings of others and take responsibility for their actions.
Unfortunately, sometimes after we asked and expressed our feelings, the problem remains unresolved. Then the table suggests the third step, which consists in the direct statement of the actions that the child must take. We do not need to scream or get angry at this moment, but we need to tell the child that what we are talking about is absolutely serious. If you give them an example, it will help them understand a situation better. The fourth step is a logical consequence. I say "logical" because the consequences must follow from the problem. If the child promised not to listen to music loudly, then the logical consequence may be to not listen to music at all on the weekends, but not to deprive the child of pocket money or going to the cinema. When we decide on the choice of logical consequences, we need to ask the opinion of the child. It must be something for which you both agree.

The mistake of many parents is that they either start with the third or fourth step and forget about the first two or skip the second step and go to the third. Often this happens because when we see that the child doesn’t listen, we think that we lose control over him/her. Many people think that the first two steps simply will not work, but I'm sure that in most cases, if we do everything right, then we will not even need to use the third and fourth steps. Children don’t like to feel controlled just as we don’t. They are much more open to action when we give them a reason why they need to do this or that, expressing their love, support, and understanding. When they understand the reason why the problem should be solved and when they see that the parents are their friends, not tyrants, then they have more desire to do what we asked. For parents, at this moment, it is important to remain patient and not expect that everything will be perfect after one or two conversations. Change requires time. It is also important to give children a second and even third chance to change everything. If the first time nothing happened even after you took all four steps, you need to try again. It is important to continue to support them and express understanding, but not to deviate from the solution of the problem. Especially if the child knew in advance about the consequences.
It seems to me that this table is a great help for many parents. I also think that we can apply it in relationships with other people. Expressing our feelings and desires, instead of reproaching a person, we show him that we love the person himself, but would like that he would change his actions. We do not condemn and do not control, but try to help him understand what we personally feel.
